I climb and inspect cellular phone towers.
How would you describe what you do?
We climb up a cell tower, say anywhere from 200 to 500 feet and do maintenance mainly on cellular phone towers changing changing out transmission lines or antennas. Sometimes we just change out light bulbs on the tower, that sort of thing.
What does your work entail?
It varies. A lot of times it’s just maintenance maintenance, changing out antennas and feed lines and, you know, fixing lighting systems, changing bulbs.
…we’ve had people come to work here saying how they’re mountain climbers, they’re not scared of heights or anything and they don’t last a day…
Some weeks you actually get into the building of the towers and that kind of stuff.
How did you get started?
I had friends that worked for a company in Cedar Rapids at the time, they asked me if I wanted to try it and I said, Sure, you know, see what it was going to be like. If it didn’t work out I still had another job I could go back to, but I did it for two days and loved it, so here I am.
What do you like about what you do?
A lot of it is just that feeling you get when people are just set off and amazed when you tell them what you do for a living. They’re like, I could never do that. You’d never catch me up that high. And it’s always a thrill because every tower’s different.
You’ve got to love your job because if you don’t love your job, then you’re not going to last at it because it takes a certain kind of person to be able to get up every morning and out of bed, go to work and then climb 500 feet in the air.
Every tower is a new, every one is a new experience so you never know what you’re going to find once you get up there.
What do you dislike?
The traveling’s pretty bad. You’re all over three or four states, so it’s kind of tough on the home life.
How do you make money/or how are you compensated?
It depends on the company. I’ve always been paid by the hour. But there’s some companies that’ll pay their employees by the job.
How much money do you make as a tower climber?
It depends on who you work for. Some companies don’t pay very well, so it varies. Last year, I think I made $60,000. But that’s working 60 hours a week on average.
What education or skills are needed to do this?
There’s some education because the more you move up, the more – as far as computer equipment and stuff, you need to learn how to run. But really you just need a good work ethic and I guess you’ve got to be a strong worker because nobody likes to carry anybody else’s weight. Also we’ve had people come to work here saying how they’re mountain climbers, they’re not scared of heights or anything and they don’t last a day because they can’t do it. I don’t know if it’s the whole just being out in the open because when you climb a mountain you have a big wall in front of you so you can’t see nothing else but when you climb a tower, 90% of the time, you can see right through it.
What is most challenging about what you do?
I’d say the winters. I always say if you can make it through the winter, you can usually make it through about anything because being up in the air like that for –even if you’re up there just for an hour, it’s usually ten times colder in the air than what it is on the ground, you have nothing to block the wind.
What is most rewarding?
I think I’d have to go back to the same thing where you tell people what you do for a living and just the awestruck looks on their face sometimes.
What advice would you offer someone considering this career?
I guess my advice to anybody is never get comfortable when you’re up in the air because when you get comfortable, you stop thinking about what you’re doing. That’s when bad things could happen.
How much time off do you get/take?
Usually we work year-round so you get your vacation which is a week or two every year. The weather allows you some every now and then, like if it’s thunder storming, then obviously, you’re not going to be climbing when there’s lightning. Sometimes during the winter if it’s too cold and we’ll take a day or two off.
What is a common misconception people have about what you do?
There’s a lot of people that say, Oh, man. You guys must do a lot of drugs and stuff to be able to do that. They think we’re all crazy.
What are your goals/dreams for the future?
Well, right now, I’ve moved up from being a tower climber full time. I’m actually working in the office now as a project manager, so I’d like to just keep doing what I’m doing right now, moving up.
What else would you like people to know about what you do?
Just that you’ve got to love what you do. You’ve got to love your job because if you don’t love your job, then you’re not going to last at it because it takes a certain kind of person to be able to get up every morning and out of bed, go to work and then climb 500 feet in the air.

Val,
I’m a little curious. I work in the tower industry and I am curious what the going pay rate for a certified climber with 1 years experience is these days. I know it all depends on the individual and their technical abilities (line sweeps, fiber testing, PIM testing, etc, But what would be a fair guess for an average tower techs hourly wage? We all have families and bills to pay. When is it time to start looking somewhere else?
Hi Bill,
It all depends, like what you have said it all depends on the individual. But then again, resume is just a paper to show what they have done and their experience. When it comes to technical interview, that paper could change into nothing. Usually, for an entry level candidate that has no experience and no certifications, they will be getting paid as low as $12-15. For a year experience climber depending on what he knows to do, junior should get pay around $17-21. Mid-Level candidate that has 3-5 years in the industry should get paid around $21-24. Of course senior and Foreman are on different pay rate. But then again, this could change depending on what they’re capable of. You could be in the industry for more than 10 years and has not done sweep testing. You could be a Foreman for quite a while and still lacking leadership.
this is just my opinion, and i do not mean to offend anybody.
Val

Hi Johnson,
How long have you been in the Tower Industry? And how long have you been with your company? Do you attain all certifications?
Val
October 18 will be a year and I’ve climbing seven days a week since i started and I’ve been with only this company. I started out at $14 an hour and my first raise put me at 15 and now I’m waiting on my second raise i have already been approved for witch puts me at $17, but ive been waiting to see it for over a month now. yes i have all the certifications needed to be on a tower and the cards to show it. also i can hang colar mounts on monopoles, fly boom gates, split sector cut overs, troubleshooting and punchlist.. this applies for AT&T sites only i have very little experience with Tmobile
i also have a valid class b CDL license
Hi Johnson,
If you are doing all that and you are doing a Fantastic job then I would say yes, you should get at least $18-22/hr. Also, the position that you hold at this moment is Top Hand. You should ask for another Performance Evaluation.
I have thought about moving to crew lead position, I have little experience with crew lead and running a crew in this industry but I’m not as comfortable with it as I am with running the top. I have trained guys on the tower that have never climbed before. So what I’m wondering is since the company I’m with is only going to be paying me 17 an hour if this raise ever shows up on my check stub, is there a company that will me better with the experience I have and has steady work year round??
Hi Johnson,
Do you mind having chat with me, I would like to discuss something to you. Please contact me at your earliest convenience.

Hi, I’ve been interested in getting into this industry for some time now. I applied to a company in Traverse City Michigan 3-4 years ago but had to be turned down due to their vehicle insurance company not wanting to cover me. Since its been a few more years and I’m hoping my DMV record for commercial insurance is a little bit more acceptable. I’m pretty mechanically inclined, I’ve been working in sawmills for the past 7 years. I’m used to working long hours in all conditions as well. I haven’t had very much experience with high climbing, maybe 100 feet at the most climbing on a harness in the leg of a very large OSB press.
Problem is I haven’t been able to find any entry level positions based out of Michigan lately. Every job ad I see is for a very experienced top hand to foreman level jobs.
Any information or jobs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a fiance who is getting into this field. I wanted to know if this would really be hard on the home. I know it requires a lot of time and I was just wondering do they have part-time climbers or does it depend on the company? My fiance is looking forward to moving up in the business but what does that mean exactly? Whats the next step to moving forward after being a tower climber? Also is there any openings in Michigan because he is starting out in Indiana. He had connections but I was thinking if he had a year of experience if he could come back to Michigan (our home state) then that would be great.

I’m currently working with Midwest tower services, it’s our family owned company. Been in tower business for the last 5 years I’m com 1 safety 2 certified. T-mobile 2g3g certified and 4g certified, also 2g3g c & i certified. I have my osha 30 card, rf awareness certification, and up to date CPR. I’m the head coordinator for our sites, Im currently managing a 5 man crew with the Sprint vision project, Im a leader, no im not trying to brag but with out good leadership no one makes money in cell market, we all know this. I’ve done beef ups for American tower, fcc take downs for for Parsons. Currently I’m in Sprint vision market just got back from Houston helping my other brother in the Nokia Siemens market, his company is called Wildcat Tower Services. I do closeouts, payroll, jsa paperwork, logins, love the bridge, lol, I have a motor home I’m always on the road, I’m a road warrior, our company is stationed out of Kansas, I have a fiance that travels with me, actually in the process of getting her com certified so I have a partner for tiger teaming, I have two lovely children, my little boy says he’s a tower dog I’m always stopping him from climbing our little Rom 20, actually had to put a fence around it cause of him, he’s 4 lol, what I’m getting at though and your probably wondering why I would leave a family owned company, well put it this way I get between 80 to even 100 hours a week, my perdium is always screwed up on my card and my brothers love making money but don’t like paying their bread maker, I shouldn’t have to ask for my pay. I’m an asset to there company and I’m being taken advantage of and I’m tired of it. I would much rather work for a company that would be more appreciative of my services I can offer. You can call/txt me on (316)5877492.
Thank you.

I have worked on cell and broadcast towers going on 14 years now, its just something a person is or isn’t made for …it dangerous, and it tears you up, makes you old fast, the employers and especially the techs have either forgotten what it is like to work up there or never have been up there because I hear so many times” yall just run up there and do it right quick”. climbing the tower is not all there is to it…but there is not much elese I personally would want to do,,we get to see things that not many people will ever get to see, you stay in pretty good shape, and you make some pretty good friends out here ,,,so to you guys interested in becoming a tower hand its a different way of life, hard on families , here lately employers think tower hands are a dime a dozen,( well tower climbers are,but not tower hands),but a person can advance fast, make allright money and challenge yourself everyday,,,
good luck to yall j

I am retired military with a communications/electronics background. I got excited when I heard about this company in Marietta Georgia that is looking to train Tower Climbers. Their towers are as high as 150′ to 200′. How much strength does it take to climb with all of your tools plus equipment and how does your muscles get rest befor you reach the top? I am very interested in this job and these are some of the questions I neglected to ask. Thanks
Good questions, you will learn how to take breaks with your climbing equipment as you get Comtrained. We hire lots of military guys and guys who are still in the Guard. We love you all and honestly feel like you are some of the best for this industry. We have a total of 5 locations here in the U.S. and one of them is in Pelham, AL. thanks,
i just recently took the opportunity to try my hands at Tower work. So i am learning all there is to know about wi-fi on Towers, lol. Was a little concerned having not done any climbing since my wife gave birth to our 1st born almost 7 yrs ago.. Ohh how i have missed climbing. And yes i am more sore than i can recall ever being, lol. Really curious as to where this change in profession is gonna lead.
Hi Zach,
This profession is a risky but all you need to concentration and commitment to hang in there for long. Anyone I see so far who have worked as tower tech have become construction manager or they are managing crews..
TC and good luck to you.
Andrew N
301-840-7110 X 61187
Hello Andrew,
Much appreciated words of encouragement. I have managed crews previously in the Audio/Visual industry for 9+ yrs and the last 3+ in a grocery store of which I am extremely pleased to get away from, LOL. The tower world is very different, I am loving the change of pace. Currently looking to acquire the funds to put towards the COMTRAIN certification. It looks as though most companies affiliated with towers are looking for that certification. The company I am currently with is evidently trying to keep to the cheaper side of employees hourly rates. Not really concerned with safety and the like.
Best regards,
Zach

•Should have Installed Antennas, Microwave, Lines, connectors, Diplexers, MHA, TMA, RRU, RF Coax, Fiber optics, and Troubleshooting issue as when required.
•Must have wireless or mobile telecom experience
Thanks,
Andrew Nagathota.

Hello, my name is Jon and im currently looking for work in the woodbine kansas area, unfortunetly i do not have any experience in this field but i am a motivated individual and i am physically fit, i am only 20 years of age standing at 5’10 and 165lbs, i do understand the dangers and the risks especially with winter coming up, and i also understand that not just anyone is capable of doing this job. i do have a wife and a 6 month old daughter so the shorter the commute the better, i have reliable transportation, and im definitly looking to give this a shot, if anyone has any information that could point me in a positive direction it would be much appreciated, please contact me at [email protected] , Thank you.
I’m looking for 4 commtrained climbers to work in the W. Va., Va. and Pa. areas starting this coming Monday, after the first of the year we may be moving to Boston so some travel is required. Contact me at [email protected]
I think this article was pretty good but when this guy ripped “mountain” climbers I knew he was just flat out envious of climbers. I have climbed my whole life in Yosemite National Park and to hear this guy rip my community tells me this guy has never met a true big wall / mountain climber. I’ve been working cell towers for 5 yrs now and my entire team is made up of big wall climbers from Yosemite. Guys come to me with their SPART and IRATA certs, but that is just industry garbage and they know how to read a book and pass a cert. OSHA (CA) only requires safety and rescue courses. In the big wall climbing world we have written the course study for climbing and self rescue and lower out. If they know how to live in a vertical existance then they’ll know more about safety, rigging and rescue than anyone else in this very very new industry. The inteview in this case tells me they’re talking to your typical SPART / IRATA cert jackass. I got a funny feeling this guy never met a real big wall climber. But instead he has met what we see in Yoemite in the summer. Climbers from the midwest…. They aint climbers, they’re tourist on a mountain. Or as we say, rescue practice. This guy is just flat out envious of our skills and knows that a team like mine would run circles around his midwestern mountain climbers… I love how he explains how when your on a mountain you see only a wall… I’d like to take him up Dawn Wall on El Cap and see if he can handle that kind of exposure… What do they call a mountain in Iowa?? A speed bump. LMAO!!!
Relax, you are taking his comment way too personally plus saying things like “Or as we say, rescue practice” shows you have a stuck up attitude yourself. This guy can only speak for his personal experience, I’m sure he isn’t an expert on all climbers just like you aren’t an expert on all tower workers.
Whoa dude…dont get your panties in such a wod…geez…pretty pathetic you got that angry from a couple of words from a guy you have never met…”LMAO”
someone is a little way to over confident and conceded lmao i see where u are coming from but if you are in fact in the tower industry you have to admit its 2 different worlds with some stuff in common like danger scenery knowledge of equipment common sense so own and so fourth they both take certain type of people to do what either one does on a regular basis.
I’ve been climbing towers now for two years. I’m on the road just about year round . This month It’s Texas. I earn 18 dollars p/hr plus occasional prevailing wage which ranges 80-100 p/hr. With plenty af over time and steady work that. Can. Be up to 70k annually. Sometime towers are 100ft sometimes there 2000 I’ve personally been as high. As 950ft. It’s nuts but its fun. No paid bene fits. And non union though which sucksMy company is based out of new jersey (my hotme state)
Hey Mike, are you interested to do some other climbs in the TX area? The payment is above the regular, great per-diem, completely new security and work equipment (Including laptop and cell phone) plus all the law benefits.
Write me if you are interested, and if you know someone else that could be interested, you could win a referral bonus as well.
Thanks,
Nestor
Nestor, I am unsure if you will receive this message or not but I do hope that you see it. Since highschool (graduated 2008) I have dreamed of being a professional climber, given, I was climbing rock faces, not towers. However, not long after graduation, real life set in and I found my self in the U.S. Navy as an Electronics Technician in the Nuclear Power program. At the present time, professional rock climbing is not a realistic goal thanks to our economy and my financial status. This is something that I am very interested in learning more about and I have the background to do the job well.
If i could get some more information from you it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
John
Hey John,

hi i’m michael, i’m from texas (45mins from dallas) i’m a sgt in the army as well as a skydiving coach, soon to leave the army to continue my education to be a commercial pilot (me and my brother same backround army/skydiver/pilot) ironically we were in the army together, now it will take some time to log enough flight hours for that and i will probably be pumping gas into airplanes for some time….or if i can find out how to get a job as a tower climber or an apprenticeship, or any info would help and it would definately help out on the bills while i’m struggling to give this pilot thing everything i’ve got, hell i’m young (24 brother is 23) in great shape and a sharp learner, my brother also wants to do this and we kinda come as a team so if anyone can give me some info/apprenticeship offer/job offer it would be greatly appreciated you can reach me at my e-mail or phone number, [email protected] (931) 302-4271 thanks

TERRIBLE pay for the risks/workload! What’s even more amazing is that the guy will probably vote against his economic interests and FOR the GOP! lol…only in America are we that retarded…
Dude, seriously? If you believe the GOP wants to hurt our economy vs what the present administration/socialist wants to…then you truly are a moron. I think you have been sitting on your bicycle seat for too long dude…or is it dudette?
A vote against the GOP is a vote against America being an economic superpower!
Wake up….smell the green leaving your wallet if you vote for the democrats!
Maybe you should ride a tricycle…it wouldn’t be as hard on your manhood as the cycle seat your using now?
I have worked with construction company’s building building homes (masonry) and I have really been looking into this and was wondering if company’s will hire people with no experience and a criminal background any input would be greatly appreciated
Typically 6 weeks these days. But I actually just got home from a 5month work adventure in Tennessee . Basically the bare minimum is 5 weeks where ever you go but after that you can decide when you want to come home. I choose to stay out for longer trips
