I climb and inspect cellular phone towers.
How would you describe what you do?
We climb up a cell tower, say anywhere from 200 to 500 feet and do maintenance mainly on cellular phone towers changing changing out transmission lines or antennas. Sometimes we just change out light bulbs on the tower, that sort of thing.
What does your work entail?
It varies. A lot of times it’s just maintenance maintenance, changing out antennas and feed lines and, you know, fixing lighting systems, changing bulbs.
…we’ve had people come to work here saying how they’re mountain climbers, they’re not scared of heights or anything and they don’t last a day…
Some weeks you actually get into the building of the towers and that kind of stuff.
How did you get started?
I had friends that worked for a company in Cedar Rapids at the time, they asked me if I wanted to try it and I said, Sure, you know, see what it was going to be like. If it didn’t work out I still had another job I could go back to, but I did it for two days and loved it, so here I am.
What do you like about what you do?
A lot of it is just that feeling you get when people are just set off and amazed when you tell them what you do for a living. They’re like, I could never do that. You’d never catch me up that high. And it’s always a thrill because every tower’s different.
You’ve got to love your job because if you don’t love your job, then you’re not going to last at it because it takes a certain kind of person to be able to get up every morning and out of bed, go to work and then climb 500 feet in the air.
Every tower is a new, every one is a new experience so you never know what you’re going to find once you get up there.
What do you dislike?
The traveling’s pretty bad. You’re all over three or four states, so it’s kind of tough on the home life.
How do you make money/or how are you compensated?
It depends on the company. I’ve always been paid by the hour. But there’s some companies that’ll pay their employees by the job.
How much money do you make as a tower climber?
It depends on who you work for. Some companies don’t pay very well, so it varies. Last year, I think I made $60,000. But that’s working 60 hours a week on average.
What education or skills are needed to do this?
There’s some education because the more you move up, the more – as far as computer equipment and stuff, you need to learn how to run. But really you just need a good work ethic and I guess you’ve got to be a strong worker because nobody likes to carry anybody else’s weight. Also we’ve had people come to work here saying how they’re mountain climbers, they’re not scared of heights or anything and they don’t last a day because they can’t do it. I don’t know if it’s the whole just being out in the open because when you climb a mountain you have a big wall in front of you so you can’t see nothing else but when you climb a tower, 90% of the time, you can see right through it.
What is most challenging about what you do?
I’d say the winters. I always say if you can make it through the winter, you can usually make it through about anything because being up in the air like that for –even if you’re up there just for an hour, it’s usually ten times colder in the air than what it is on the ground, you have nothing to block the wind.
What is most rewarding?
I think I’d have to go back to the same thing where you tell people what you do for a living and just the awestruck looks on their face sometimes.
What advice would you offer someone considering this career?
I guess my advice to anybody is never get comfortable when you’re up in the air because when you get comfortable, you stop thinking about what you’re doing. That’s when bad things could happen.
How much time off do you get/take?
Usually we work year-round so you get your vacation which is a week or two every year. The weather allows you some every now and then, like if it’s thunder storming, then obviously, you’re not going to be climbing when there’s lightning. Sometimes during the winter if it’s too cold and we’ll take a day or two off.
What is a common misconception people have about what you do?
There’s a lot of people that say, Oh, man. You guys must do a lot of drugs and stuff to be able to do that. They think we’re all crazy.
What are your goals/dreams for the future?
Well, right now, I’ve moved up from being a tower climber full time. I’m actually working in the office now as a project manager, so I’d like to just keep doing what I’m doing right now, moving up.
What else would you like people to know about what you do?
Just that you’ve got to love what you do. You’ve got to love your job because if you don’t love your job, then you’re not going to last at it because it takes a certain kind of person to be able to get up every morning and out of bed, go to work and then climb 500 feet in the air.
Tower climbing is a low paying job in the United States for the risks you deal with performing your job, I highly recommend if you work for a company climbing to talk with your non-exempt co-workers and form a UNION to help bargain better wages. Personally I do not climb full-time, I am a Lead Electronic Technician and get paid double time whenever I put a harness on to climb and it is not easy work by any means! That being said I truely respect what you do everyday for a living and feel those of you who do this type of work everyday need to be paid much higher wages than these companies are offering! There is a reason your jobs have a huge turnover rate, the risks do not outweigh the reward! YOU SHOULD DEMAND HIGHER WAGES!
I am really interested in getting into tower climbing I am an experienced tree climber and have 16 years of commercial electrical. I would like to know how to get into this carrier
AMEN!!!! I was shocked to learn there is no union for this job!

This sounds very very intriguing to me. While I’ve never done much climbing, I do seem to get a thrill out of heights. I feel like this is something I could enjoy and be good at! Where would I even begin to look for work in a field like this?? Can somebody point me in the right direction with which company I can look into or possibly a website?

Hello, I’ve been climbing towers for 2 yrs. and I love it. I love the fact that I get paid to workout! With that being said, I now realize I can make good money working for a company but I will never make great money working for someone else. I am looking to start up my own Tower Inspection Company and was hoping to get some positive feedback or possibly someone to help me get a foot in the door or point me in the right direction. I am looking to start this company while residing in OK but am planning to move to FL by Sept. If my future company takes off or gets started here in OK, I will stay until I can build a good enough foundation to move to Fl. But if, I am not able to start up a company here in OK, I will hire on with a company in FL., climbing towers, and work on setting up shop in FL, Inspecting Towers.
So if anyone, has any ideas they can throw at me, that would be great or like said help point me in the right direction. Thank you, all.
I am a tower rigger and just opened up the online pages about tower climbers and falls, and re visited some old and new things about this industry in 2017. For me to become employable as a tower rigger today it would cost out of pocket about $6000 in certification courses to be an authorized climber and gin pole installer. How much am I worth now?$12 an hour ?? Wow I just can’t wait to get started/ lol/ Here some back ground of my experience ,I started tower climbing in 1973,erected a 1000 foot TV tower and offshore flarestack, erected and maintained Rohn,Stainless,Pirod,Allied,American Standard,Magnum towers and TV antennas how much am I worth now $16 an hour plus per diem wow no wonder everyone else in the broadcast business drives Cadillac’s and buys homes while I keep trying to pay the rent. I stopped rigging in 1988 hell being a janitor pays $16 an hour and I’m home every night ,let me rephrase that cleaning tolits pays more

In our industry, unlike other skilled trades. We lack journeymans and master cell tower technition certification cards. With a card like linesmen, eletritions, and plumbers carry for the UAW, we wouod be guarenteed a certain salary. Maybe not as much as a linesmen but 10 years of dedication to this industry should be noted as a qualified skilled trade. Until we strive to gane a professional industry with professional skilled tradesmen we will never make this happen.

Hello! My name is Kailie and I am a tree climber from northern Indiana seeking winter work and possibly new career. Although I do not have and previous experience or knowledge in this field, I am a fast hands on learner with a strong work ethic! I really enjoy adrenaline jobs such as, climbing 120ft open structured trees (for pruning) or maybe dangling from a crane during a storm damage removal. Hillclimbing dirtbikes and skydiving are amongst my favorite extra curricular activities. I have ADHD, therefore, traditional jobs do not hold my attention and I have a tendency to get bored with the job. If it gets my adrenaline going, it will hold my attention!
If you are interested in a hard working, self motivated, dedicated, team member with the desire to excel, please do not hesitate to respond and I will get a resume to you A.S.A.P.! Thank you for your time and consideration!

I am looking for a company that seeks a serious employee that wants to deliver solid work and make my way up. I want to be an asset that will make a company grow and be successful. I learn very quickly and there is no challenge too big or small. I moved my way from the ground to a foreman in 13 months between 2 companies. I have been in the industry for a total of 18 months, but I doubt you would guess that without my employment history. All of my equipment such as a harness and anything attached to it, I have purchased and personally own. I would like to stay in the Michigan area so if anyone out there thinks I may be a match for what they are looking for, please email. [email protected] Thank you.

A good friend of mine works as a cell tower auditor and has been for a few years now. He got the job through one of his friends and I myself have been trying to get hired through him and his girlfriend (they are partners) with the same company. What advice does anyone have to help me better my chances at getting on quicker? I’ve taken the first aid/cpr/aed certification class through Red Cross. I bought the Comtrain Tower Rescue and Safety book to study for when I take the class. I even had his GF send me a copy of the 502 checklist form that they use for every tower and have been studying that for a couple months now. I have 8 years of rock climbing experience. My current job I use a certain hand held GPS device outdoors all year in all weather conditions. I’m no stranger to being out in 20 degrees for 8 hrs or 100 degrees for 8 hrs. I guess I’m just stumped because at my current job I trained him back in early 2010 and then he leaves to go climb towers. We both rock climbed together nearly everyday and weekend up until he left and I just don’t know how he got it so fast. Anyway, great interview and I hope one day I can say to those who ask, I climb cell towers and love every minute of it.
Companies are hiring tower climbers on towerclimber.com

My son was just hired through K2COM Services LLC as a contracted employee for General Dynamics Information Technology. We are in Ohio, he works in MI, Toledo, IN areas. He is in hotel after hotel but does get per diem.
Such an incredibly low paying occupation! It’s a joke how hard you will get worked and the insane amount of time spent on the road. Not to mention cut corners on safety to save a few bucks or just out of stupidity. I climbed for two different companies and I assure you that you do not want this job. If you find cellular interesting and want to get into the field, get a job doing in-building DAS. You will make more money in half the hours.

Hey I got experience in climbing . I worked at wright tree service and also at townsmen tree services. In both places I was a climber. And I would like to be a cell phone tower climber.
cell towers are a whole different ball game bro, I know people who did rock climbing and they froze when they broke the tree line. it will be hard finding a company that will take your experience as relevent experience for the industry, your best bet would be to attend a school called airstreams in california.

I am a novice tower climber living in Portland, OR. The small company I started with let me go because AT&T cancelled all the work they had lined up and that made continuing to train me financially unfeasible. If anyone is looking for someone with a basic understanding and a little experience with actual climbing (I climbed a 200′ monopole to start and have done a 250′ guyed wire as well as doing a night cut on the monopole), I’m interested. I really enjoyed the work and have my OSHA 10 & CPR/AED.
We need climbers NOW. Doing projects in northern Ohio for quite a while. Call me and we will talk. 615.438.4957.
very interested me and my cousin are from florida willing to travel hard working please contact me josh.

I am looking for a job as a tower climber, greenhand, reside in Dallas, TX. Willing to relocate anywhere. 214-469-7401. Will only be a good number until sunday.
I’m an ET in the US NAVY on a submarine and I’m interested in this type of work. I get out in 2016 so I have a little bit of time left in but I’m part of the communication division, so does anyone tthink that I would have the right experience for the job?
Austen,
I got out of the Army about 5 months ago, and I have been working in the tower industry for about 3 months now. Your communication training from the military will not cross over much into this field, but your physical fitness, hard work ethic, ability to show up on time, and willingness to learn are fantastic skills. You can excel far above most of your peers. Keep yourself out there. It is never to early to start looking around at your options.

My reasons for leaving being that I am working long hours into the A.M and on weekends and only being payed a considerably low upfront of $200.00 no matter the days I put in .
Me and my expecting wife need a check that can support a growing family and I need a professional employer. I love my job and would like to keep doing it elsewhere.

Hi guys,
I’m a rigger in Canada and I’m thinking about pursuing work over seas in Saudi Arabia. If anybody has any information on the subject, it would be greatly appreciated as I can’t even seem to find the names of construction companies over there. I’ve found tower companies in India but I’m not sure if the pay is the same there. Feel free to e-mail me if you can point me in the right direction. Thanks.

With almost 15 years of wireless construction experience, I must say two things to those interested in ‘trying out’ a tower climbing job… First, beware! You not only have to worry about recruiters taking a cut of your wages if you can’ t find an employer to hire you directly, but you also have to worry about the companies themselves these days. MANY are not going to last more than a year or two. You’d be lucky to find one that has established relationships with carriers local project managers, that has been around for more than 5-10 years… who is really who you want to work for, do your homework!!
Second, BEWARE!!! There are too many deaths in our industry each year for several reasons… In general, those reasons fall into a few different general assumptions; inexperience of the worker, inexperience of the supervisor(s), lack of tower climbing/safety experience of a crew/foreman, lack of tower construction knowledge and installation standards/procedures, and many times plain ignorance falls into play… My suggestion, avoid tower construction companies with less than 10 years of actual tower work, and avoid those focused on consulting, recruiting or placement… You’ll get promised the world and find out shortly that misrepresentation of the facts is common.
PM me if you would like more advice or care to work in the Rocky Mountain Region!!

For a year I have been working for a small company called IRON CITY telecom, located in Brooklyn. We did Decom of cell site, remove antennas, RF cables and clean up debris. My hopes is to land with a full time leading company who would consider me. I do not have a climbers certificate, but do own my gear. Willing to travel or relocate for new opportunities. I am good strong worker and fast learner.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE

I’ve been interested in getting into this line of work for some time. I’ve applied before to a company in traverse city michigan a few years ago but had to be denied for one reason which was my dmv record. But that has since been cleared up and I have been covered by commercial insurance. I am still looking for a way into the industry, but cannot find anyone that will hire entry level people. I’m located in mid/northern michigan. Any leads would be appreciated. Travel not an issue.
Generally speaking, how old is too old to be considered for a starting position as a tower climber or ground worker aspiring to become a tower climber? Fitness level is obviously an issue, but assuming excellent physical condition?
I am 67 yrs. old and I started climbing towers when I was 22. I was an engineer for a TV station and started doing re lamps and microwave antennas . I still do two way tower work as a part of my day job and do freelance tower work for various cities and counties. While it is not my full time job since I am in management and kind of desk bound 🙁 I really feel if I had to I could make this a full time since I really enjoy travel and physical work. If you are in excellent physical condition and like physical work I would say go for it!! Every tower is different and has its own challenges but there is nothing like the feeling of being on top of a tower . Best wishes and be safe!
Is this tower worker named Jeff Owens

Are there any companies in Pennsylvania/New Jersey/Delaware that are hiring to do this kind of work?
I’m currently looking for a couple of climbers in the NJ NY area..I do audits for a small co. in southern NJ, but we work all over the northeast. let me tell you ,I have been doing tower work for over 8 years now and this has to be the easiest money I’ve made working on towers…AUDITS!…and easy ones at that.
.I get healthcare and its salary. The best part is that I only climb maybe 3 towers a day and most of them are under 200ft. All you have to do is get the downtilt, serial number and azimuth. Take a few overall picks and done. I might be on a tower for an hour at most. I usually start at 8 and I’m usually done by 2pm…not bad for 52 grand a year…give me a hollar if interested..8174202761
done by 2pm
Ellis,
Is there still availability? Very interested located in so. Jersey.
Hi all,
I’m recently going through a career change and have always wanted to climb towers. My question is how might I get involved with tower companies in the Atlanta area? I have a strong work ethic and am excited to see what it’s like to work in this environment. It’s always been a dream I’ve held in the back of my mind. I have a Masters in Biomedical science & Healthcare Management, but I have discovered I don’t care much for long hours inside of hospitals. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello everyone. I am a 33 year-old looking for an opportunity to break into network infrastructure/tower climbing. I have worked many technical jobs ranging from construction and A/V systems installation but have been working in architecture in Chicago for the past several years creating full construction documents with a focus on MEP systems design. I am in great shape and a very hard worker and have always been very mechanically inclined and enjoy working on new types of systems, from infrastructure to programming. I am at a point in my life where I can pick up and move to a new location quickly and easily. I have no experience as a climber, but I am a very fast learner and willing to do whatever is necessary to meet my goal. I understand the need for safety though am not easily deterred by harsh weather conditions or other obstacles. I just recently spoke with a company in WA state about an entry-level position they are considering me for. My question to anyone that can help is this…should I enroll in a climbing certification course on my own, before looking for additional employment or do some companies train new hires and help them attain the necessary certification? Any information some of you with experience jumping into this line of work could provide would be truly appreciated. My brother is a firefighter and works as a climbing trainer on his own time. I am hoping to make this career change very soon, so I am looking forward to all advice available. Thank you and good luck to everyone. [email protected]
